Apple plans to launch AirPods with integrated hearing aids.

According to the World Health Organization, 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer from hearing loss.

On Monday, Apple announced that a new generation of AirPods earbuds will include integrated hearing aids, a feature that it claims will benefit over 1 billion people worldwide.

For people with mild to moderate hearing loss, Apple describes the feature on the AirPods Pro as being comparable to an over-the-counter hearing aid. AirPods with "personalized dynamic adjustments" will enable users to accurately hear their immediate listening environments, with sounds boosted to prescribed levels in real time, following hearing tests on iPhones or iPads running iOS 18.

According to Apple, "this keeps them connected to the people and environment around them and helps them engage in conversation better."

Any media that the user is listening to automatically gets the settings applied as well.

About five minutes are needed for the hearing test. Audiograms and other results will be kept confidentially in the Health app.

The personalized hearing profile will be used by the AirPods Pro to guide the real-time sound adjustment feature, which includes phone calls, music, and other media.

The upgraded AirPods also come with a passive noise-reduction hearing loss "prevention" feature that, according to Apple, would be useful at live concerts. It automatically reduces background loud noises while maintaining audio integrity.
