Kim Jong Un of North Korea says his nation will "exponentially" increase its nuclear arsenal, according to state media.

According to state media KCNA on Tuesday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that the nation is currently putting its nuclear force construction policy into practice in order to increase the number of nuclear weapons "exponentially."

Kim stated that North Korea needs to better prepare its "nuclear capability and its readiness to use it properly at any given time in ensuring the security rights of the state" in a speech on the nation's founding anniversary on Monday, according to KCNA.

In order to counter "the various threats posed by the United States and its followers," he continued, a robust military presence is required.

In addition, Kim stated that North Korea perceives a US-led nuclear-armed bloc in the region as a "grave threat."

Cho Chang-rae, the deputy defense minister for policy in South Korea, along with his US and Japanese counterparts denounced Pyongyang's recent diversification of its nuclear delivery systems, tests, and multiple ballistic missile launches on Tuesday.

According to a joint statement issued by the US State Department, the three reaffirmed their commitment to bolster trilateral cooperation to maintain regional peace, including by thwarting North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. The meeting took place in Seoul.

They also decided to quickly schedule another trilateral military drill called Freedom Edge. Tuesday will also see a meeting between the United Nations Command (UNC) member states and South Korea's minister of defense. The US military commander stationed in South Korea is in charge of the UNC.

Germany joined the United Nations Command in South Korea last month. The UNC helps guard the heavily guarded border with North Korea and has pledged to defend the South in the event of war.

Germany's admission into the US-led UN border monitoring force has sparked tensions, according to North Korea, which has denounced the UNC as a "illegal war organization."
